BIG W, one of Australia’s most prolific retailers, relies on Pilot Air’s expertise in its Sydney Distribution Centre (DC).
After a failure with its previous air compressor system, BIG W’s DC in western Sydney came under significant stress and needed a viable long-term solution to keep its operation efficient and cost-effective. Recommended by the material handling company servicing the DC, Pilot Air was engaged to provide an air compressor system with the power, reliability and efficiencies to meet the demands of a variable volume distribution centre that was critical to the retailer’s reputational value.
Pilot Air conducted an onsite audit of the DC’s operational scheduling. Using specialised data logging software, we created a quantitative sample size of the power usage cycles for the DC to perform at optimum levels during both high-demand periods and routine frequency. Unpacking the data analysis, the team recommended a customised variable speed air compressor solution that accounted for the variations in high to low traffic days, air distribution, unit location and size that positively impacted the performance environment while cutting energy consumption.

The Pilot ALTA-TEC Industrial 22 Variable Speed Rotary Screw air compressor features remote monitoring (on demand) – via GSM, GPRS, ethernet or Wi-Fi module – for online compressor status, remote assistance, connection with PC, smartphone and tablet and connection between neighbour compressors.
The optional Service Management System (SMS 2.0) device allows operators and service centres to remotely control and perform preventive maintenance checks on screw compressors equipped with ETIV controller. These facilities are provided when the device is configured for local internet network via Wi-Fi or ethernet connectivity. The SMS system automatically sends emails in the case of a fault or other anomalies and/or for automatic regular emails (hourly, daily or weekly) to be sent to monitor the proper operation of the compressor and to define the remaining hours for service. Other information and settings can be accessed remotely, aimed at safeguarding the reliability of the system.
